After conducting the first studies on sperm quality in Spain, Institut Marquès demonstrated the negative effect of environmental toxins on fertility. That is why we have been involved in several information campaigns and, in 2018, we launched our "Embryo Forest".
For years now, Institut Marquès's trajectory has been closely linked to the environment. It is not for nothing that we have carried out several studies since 2002 to better understand semen quality and the adverse effects that environmental pollution has on fertility. In fact, we are the only ones to have carried out a comparative study on semen quality in Spain. And, according to our research, toxins (endocrine disruptors) and environmental pollution are directly related to the increase in sterility in the most industrialized areas.
After demonstrating the impact that pollution has on health and fertility, Institut Marquès decided to do its bit to fight as much as possible against this worrying trend. For this reason, in 2018, “El Bosc dels Embrions” was presented, a Corporate Social Responsibility project that consists of planting a tree for each child we help to be born thanks to Assisted Reproduction. Since then, we have offered all our patients, as a gift when their child is born, the possibility of planting a tree in their name.
The initiative was launched by the environmental organization L'Escurçó, from Tarragona, with which we collaborate in the reforestation of the mountain of Mare de Déu de la Roca, in Mont-roig del Camp. Due to the great response that this initiative has generated, we have decided to internationalize our Embryo Forest by partnering with Treedom, the first platform in the world that allows any user to plant a tree and follow the history of the project of which they are part online.
With this agreement, the Embryo Forest of Institut Marquès is already growing in Africa thanks to local farmers. In this way, in addition to the environmental impact, it also contributes to producing social and economic benefits for different communities.
The Embryo Forest was selected by the #PorElClima Community project as one of the 101 business examples that are recognized for their commitment and work in action against the climate emergency. These 101 initiatives are part of a report that was presented around the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in December 2019 in Madrid.
This is just one example of Institut Marquès' commitment to preserving the environment. In 2010, Institut Marquès sponsored the participation of Lluís Pallarès in the North Pole Marathon, the planet's garbage collector. In this competition, Pallarès ran dressed as a sperm to raise awareness about the effects of chemical pollution on male fertility.
In addition, the Marquès Institute supports the manifesto and actions of Citizens for Science in Pesticide Regulation, a citizen coalition formed by people from civil society, institutions, scientists and legal experts who demand reform of the use of pesticides in the European Union.
