Tandem IVF

Combination of own and donor eggs

What is Tandem IVF?

In what cases is Tandem IVF recommended?

Tandem IVF may be a suitable option in:

  • Women with low ovarian response, but who still produce some quality eggs.
  • Patients over 38-40 years old who wish to try using their own eggs, but want to increase their chances of success.
  • Couples seeking a balance between maintaining the woman's genetic contribution and resorting to egg donation as support.
  • Situations in which previous attempts with conventional IVF have failed.

How does the Tandem IVF process work?

Ovarian stimulation of the patient

The woman receives hormonal medication to stimulate the growth of her eggs.

Selecting an egg donor

A compatible donor is selected in case it is needed, should the patient's own IVF fail.

Follicular puncture

The patient's eggs are obtained.

In vitro fertilization

The patient's eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with the sperm of the partner or a donor.

Embryo culture and selection

The embryos are developed to the blastocyst stage and the best quality ones are selected.

Embryo transfer

An embryo with a higher implantation potential is transferred to the uterus.

In case there are no embryos available for transfer

The donor stimulation cycle begins immediately, with the puncture, fertilization, culture and embryo transfer.

Advantages of Tandem IVF

  • It allows the use of one's own eggs, while maintaining the possibility of genetic transmission.
  • Increase the chances of success by sequentially adding the cycle with eggs from a young donor.
  • It reduces the emotional frustration of resorting directly to an exclusive donation.
  • It offers greater flexibility in treatment.

Drawbacks and considerations

  • It is a more complex treatment, since it involves having the donor prepared, while we perform the cycle on the patient.
  • It may be more expensive than conventional IVF or egg donation.
  • It requires emotional acceptance, since pregnancy can be achieved with one's own eggs or those of a donor.
