Combination of own and donor eggs
Tandem IVF is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment that uses the patient's own eggs sequentially, with the option of quickly using donor eggs if a successful pregnancy has not occurred.
The patient's eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with sperm from her partner or a donor, and the highest-quality embryos are then selected for transfer to the uterus. If embryos are not available in this first stage, the same process is immediately performed using donor eggs.
This technique is designed to increase the chances of pregnancy in women with low ovarian reserve or those who have not achieved positive results in previous cycles using their own eggs.
Tandem IVF may be a suitable option in:
The woman receives hormonal medication to stimulate the growth of her eggs.
A compatible donor is selected in case it is needed, should the patient's own IVF fail.
The patient's eggs are obtained.
The patient's eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with the sperm of the partner or a donor.
The embryos are developed to the blastocyst stage and the best quality ones are selected.
An embryo with a higher implantation potential is transferred to the uterus.
The donor stimulation cycle begins immediately, with the puncture, fertilization, culture and embryo transfer.
The success rate will depend on the patient's age and ovarian reserve, but by incorporating donor eggs, the chances of achieving pregnancy are higher than with the patient's own eggs alone.
Not necessarily. It's an intermediate option for patients who want to try using their own eggs one last time without giving up the possibility of donation.
Not in all clinics. It requires experience and organization, so it's only available in specialized centers.
