Institut Marquès is a family project that represents 100 years of history and four generations of gynecologists from the Marquès family. Institut Marquès has introduced the most innovative medical techniques to our country and has become an internationally renowned center for Assisted Reproduction, one of the most award-winning clinics in its field.
The name Institut Marquès corresponds to the surname of a family whose members have been the bond of unity and continuity. Its founder was Dr. Vicens Marquès i Bertran (Barcelona, 1895-1977), who began practicing as a gynecologist in 1922, 100 years ago.
Throughout this time, his vocation for gynecology has been passed down through four generations, from his son, Dr. Leonardo Marquès Giraut, to his grandson, Dr. Leonardo Marquès Amorós, and finally to his great-grandson, Dr. Borja Marquès López-Teijón.
When the first Dr. Marquès began his career as a gynecologist, most women had their children at home, and only patients suffering from serious complications came to the hospital.
In 1941, he founded and directed the Sanatorium Maternal, which, with 7,000 births and more than 2,000 gynecological interventions, became one of the most advanced in Spain at the time and significantly reduced maternal-fetal problems. Despite the great medical advancement this represented, Dr. Vicens Marquès remained concerned about the suffering of patients and, seeking to remedy this, promoted analgesia. Another of his concerns was couples with infertility problems, since at that time little could be done to help them. For this reason, he became one of the founding members of the Spanish Fertility Society.
In 1952, Dr. Vicens Marquès's eldest son, Leonardo Marquès Giraut, joined the clinic. In addition to working at the private Maternal Sanatorium, Dr. Leonardo Marquès was clinical head of the Municipal Institute of Maternity and the Gynecology Department at the Hospital de Ntra. Sra. del Mar until 1969. He later created and directed the Infertility Service at the Red Cross Hospital in Barcelona until 1976. Following his father's concerns regarding infertility problems, he conducted important studies on tubal patency and received the Fargas Award from the Barcelona Academy of Medical Sciences.
In 1965, Dr. Marquès left their first clinic and, together with their colleagues, moved to the Quirón Clinic with the aim of improving patient care in a large medical center with all the specialists and surgical equipment at their disposal.
In 1987, the third generation of family gynecologists joined the team.

The eldest brother, Dr. Leonardo Marquès Amorós (Registration Number: 18976), and Dr. Marisa López-Teijón Peréz (Registration Number: 24007), began their practice at Institut Marquès, using innovative techniques at the time, such as diagnostic and surgical hysteroscopy, and also promoting assisted reproduction techniques. In 1989, they installed the first In Vitro Fertilization Laboratory in the operating rooms of Clínica Quirón. Over the years, this laboratory has grown and incorporated the latest techniques, such as embryo freezing, intracytoplasmic injection (ICSI), sequential embryo cultures, Assisted Hatching, and more.
In the last decade, due to increased social demand, special attention has been paid to the egg and sperm donation program.
In 2005, the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGT) laboratory was created, positioning Institut Marquès as one of the pioneering reproductive centers in the genetic analysis of embryos, eggs, and sperm.
That same year, the Institut Marquès Reproduction Service moved to the CIMA Clinic and located its offices in La Masía, an emblematic 17th-century building that is part of Barcelona's artistic heritage and which years ago housed the Luis Vives College of General Studies.
For its part, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Institut Marquès offers comprehensive gynecological care throughout the different stages of a woman's life. To this end, it has a specialized medical team in the Childhood and Adolescent Gynecology, Prenatal Diagnosis, Breast Pathology, Gynecological Oncology, and Endoscopy Units.
In December 2017, Institut Marquès opened its current location on Avenida Diagonal in Barcelona, offering a truly unique experience for expectant parents. In a clinic that breaks all the rules in terms of design, the latest technologies, care, and services, our patients feel at home in a warm and welcoming environment. With the addition of Dr. Borja Marquès, the fourth generation of gynecologists in the family is now part of the Institut Marquès team.
In 2022, we celebrate our centenary by reaffirming ourselves as a family and personal project with a precious goal: excellence.
