Both Institut Marquès, as a Medical Centre, as well as its CEO, Dr Marisa López- Teijón are part of the coalition of civil society, institutions, scientists and legal experts “Citizens for Science in Pesticide Regulation”. The coalition has signed a manifesto to demand a reform on the use of pesticides in the European Union.

The manifesto aims to protect the food safety through a reform that prioritises public health, the environment and a sustainable agriculture. Therefore, the text advocates for an independent regulation without vested interests. According to the manifesto, “the European Union has one of the best regulations for pesticides in the world. However, the rules are not implemented properly” and “the system allows private interests to take priority over health and the environment”.

“Citizens for Science in Pesticide Regulation” calls on the European authorities to reform the regulation in order to increase the level of protection against pesticides, which have negative effects on health and the environment. In the case of reproductive health, previous studies on male fertility carried out by Institut Marquès determined a worse semen quality in those areas where the presence of this kind of chemical substances was higher. Some of these substances behave as endocrine disruptors, acting as a hormone without being one, and can lead to alterations in the testicular development of the baby during pregnancy.
